Default 4.2L V6. Good engine?

I'm looking at a 2000 F-150, 4x2, short box, with a 4.2l V-6 and don't know a thing about this motor.

I do know this is the engine that replaced the 300 I-6 and that's about it.

I'd rather have a 4.6 but my choices are really limited right now. This truck should be OK for everything I need to do with it (Basically a dailly driver with no towing or heavy hauling).

Is this engine comparable in power/torque to the old 300 I-6?

Is there a decent fuel milage gain over a 4.6 powered truck?

Finally, is this a good durable engine?

Thanks!

I had a 98 f-150 long bed 4x4 with a 4.2 in it. I had 185,000 miles on the truck before it got totaled. I had absolutely no problems with that truck or motor. It was the little engine that could. When my daughters moved from Rochester NY to Phoenix AZ to go to college. I bought a utility trailer, and enclosed it, loaded all their stuff in the trailer, put their 250 ninjas in the back of the truck and moved them. I was over the limit on the truck by a good 600 or 700 lbs. It made it through all the mountains sometimes in second gear with my foot to the floor to maintain 30 mph (I wouldn't want to do that very often but you do what you have to). If I remember right the 4.2 is actually a better motor than either of the V8's because it is a none interference engine design were the V8's aren't. I have a 4.6 in my 2005 that I bought after totaling the 98 and I would have bought a 4.2 in that if ford would have offered the 4.2 in a 4x4 in 2005 (still like that little motor better). I don't remember what the HP and torque were on my 4.2 but you can look that up easy enough. I averaged 17-18 mpg just around home, I got 21 once on a trip on one tank of gas with the 4.2. With my 4.6 I get about 16 mpg just banging around, and got 19 on a trip.
