Default Roaring fan, clutch?

On my 04 F150 5.4, the cooling fan is quite loud, this is the first truck like this I have owned and I dont know how loud they normally are, but any other truck I have owned, it might roar when I start it up for the first 30 seconds or so, but this one never seems to shut up, are they this noisy normally or is my fan clutch sticking, if so how difficult are these to replace?

Default Ford Racket:

The fan in my 97 makes a lot of racket on startup, but does quiet rather quickly.

Get under the hood and grab a fan blade and see how much resistance to rotation is there. The fan should turn smoothly with little resistance with no play between the fan and the waterpump shaft.

Changing the clutch poses no great task other than the usual access problems. A special tool set is required to get the drive hub off the waterpump shaft. One tool part holds the waterpump at the pulley and the other part is a large open-end wrench (spanner to our Brit friends).

^^x2 The stock fan is easier to remove than I thought it would be. The wrench kit was $60 at the auto parts store here, but full refund when I brought it back, basically free rental.

Just like everyone has already said, the clutch is probably not disengaging. When I bought my truck it sounded like a damn jet was taking off every time I'd leave a light. The fan was very hard to turn by hand when cold. Now it spins freely after replacing the clutch.

Thanks for the replies, I tried to move the fan back and forth, it moves but with hesitation, I will look further into it.

The whole idea of a fan clutch is so you won't hear the fan noise. Should only lock in in extremely hot weather, happens here in the Las Vegas area in 105+ temps. Put a new clutch on it and enjoy the quiet.
