Here are the figures on ethanol vis gasoline.

The energy of ethanol relative to gasoline

A. 76,000 = BTU of energy in a gallon of ethanol
B. 116,090 = BTU of energy in a gallon of gasoline
C. .655 = 2/3 = GGE of energy in a gallon of ethanol. A/B.(GGE =energy in a gal. of gas)
D. 1.53 = Gallons of ethanol is equal to 1 gallon of gasoline.

The basic story on ethanol mileage and cost

Some Ethanol proponents claim it doesn't hurt their mileage, but this goes against physics, and you will not find the ethanol lobby making such fraudulent claims--they could be sued. But just to be sure, zFacts analyzed all of EPA's ethanol mileage tests for one year and, big surprise, ethanol gave exactly 2/3 the mileage of gasoline.

A diesel engine is much more efficient.
Volkwagen road tested diesel power Polo cars in the Rocky Mountain area. They tested both the 1.2 L TDI, turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, and the 1.6 L TDI, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. I talked to several people who did the road testing and they where very pleased with both engines. The 3-cylinder could get as much as 75 mpg, while the 4-cylinder could easily top 65 mpg.

If I where getting an new F150 I would get a flex-fuel engine not because I would run E85 but that I could use any gasoline mix available at a filling station.

I like spending money on my truck to make it do what I want.
Can you give me some tips to get my millage back around 20 on my 09 F150?

You won't get back mileage lost to E85 but there are several ways to improve a little here and a little there. Keep the air in your tires up and even a few psi over to reduce rolling resistance. Since you won't be driving for any performance just keep the air filter element clean and also get some MAF cleaner to keep pollutants off of it. Changing ALL of your fluids except brake fluid, due to ABS, to full synthetic. I've seen nearly .5 mpg on my trans fluid change. Get a vacuum guage and drive to keep the highest value at all times. I've heard and seen windows/tailgate up or down for increased mileage and I don't see the difference. Don't run your A/C till you have to. You can add a bottle of water wetter to transfer heat to the radiator to run cooler as a hot running engine has more losses. Some people believe that a clean clear coat and waxed will give mileage increases. See you can't just put a magic bullet on and expect 5-10 mpg.

I don't run E85 just E10 and have done about everything you mentioned except the vacuum guage . Thought I might put a tonneau cover from my tool box back to see if that helps! Guess I'll have to live with the 15 to 17 MPG.

You can get a tuner also and get a mileage improvement.
