I know these are designed to run wide open all day however, I think I'm going to swap my 3.55 gears for 3.08 . What do you guys think? I think that should put me somewhere around 1850 rpms.
Since you have dealt with the 6bt, is it just too big period to even consider putting in a 97 f150?

Farmboy is all I've found. I'm trying to avoid a SAS so I'm probably going 4bt

I have not done one, but I would think the 4 bt would be ok...with the 4 bt it is not even really the weight that concerns me its the vibration. I've seen one vibrate a jeep to death.. and as 4 bt are beccoming a lot harder to find and $ way over what a good 6bt would cost I've noticed a lot of guys going with the Isuzu or mitz 3.9 ....

Well you need to do some research. A 4bt will be a lot harder to find and about 2x the money. And trust me it well shake the truck apart at some point but will work with a lift. The 6bt is cheaper, but I'm not sure how long things will last lifted. If its not your dd then I say go for it. Since I'm on ill give and update. 12000 miles on swap and 4k since 3.08 gear change. Gas mpg didn't improve much at all but much better on the highway. Put it on lift yesterday and all is good, no play on any steering or supination parts at all. I do have a slight slave bearing rattle in nuteral but I'm told that's normal. Pulled the heavyset load of the swap yesterday, a 236 bobcat on 16 foot trailer with trailer brakes of corse. Pulled it with 0 problames! I'm putting the bobcat motor in a restored 95 Nissan hardbody so ill keep you updated on that swap soon. Shooting for 42 mpg on that swap.
