Cam Phasers
It the 5.4 is making tapping, ticking, rattling or diesel noises you probably have or have had low oil pressure and something is worn and needs replacing!
The cam phasers are not normally the first thing to suffer.
The chain tensioners can blow a seal and this allows incorrct chain tension and you can even lose accurate timing if the chain jumps a tooth. The cam phaser solenoids can fail or become clogged.
Running with a noisy phaser means you are running with a spinning multi part item inside your engine....if it fails, it drops straight into your timing chain and sump.
Lash adjusters and rockers also make noises when worn.....
Best to change the whole lot!

I had a 2008 F250 that had a problem at 50,000 miles. I took it to the dealer that I purchased it from and they said it was the cam phasor and it was still under the 60,000 mile warranty. Then they put the new cam phasor in but the check engine light came on and they said it needed a new engine. The problem I have is they told me it was going to cost me $6000.00 because they said they didn't think the oil was changed reguarly. Well I don't have $6000.00 to put into a new engine. What should or can I do? HELP!
here's a video of what the cam phaser sounds like if it is the culprit. the video also has a before and after, once cam phaser lockouts have been installed.

I have the same problem 08 5.4 57,000 miles, was sounding like a deisel at low rpm and missing badly, brought to a ford dealer and was told to put a motorcraft filter in it, was using motorcraft or fram from day one and 5 30 motorcraft semi syn oil every 3000 miles, brought to another dealer they laughed at the original diagnonsis and changed the cam phasors, now I get the truck back and it has a deep engine knock and is twice as loud as it was before the service, dealer says it needs a new motor and says he has to call some rep or some bs and that he doesnt know if they will cover the new motor, of ccourse I am livid and at the end of my rope, I called Ford customer relations and started a paper trail and docuemtation of this debacle.
What really frosts my nuts is the truck is far worse than when I dropped it off and now has a check engine light that wasnt there before.
Until and unless there is a real good problem with the engine and the vehicle is running fine then i don't think there is any need to take it to a mechanic all you can do is consult one about it and get his view on it.
