How can I fix a 1998 Ford F150 automatic transmission that stays in forward gear no matter where the selection is

Auto trans best left to pro not internet wizards unless you are very mechanically inclined.
This wizard would suggest you start with the linkage then move on to the valve body.
welcome to the forum a great source for info good and bad you just have to sort through it.

The only time I have seen this happen is when the intermediate mechanical diode one way clutch failed/seized and the intermediate clutches got so hot the friction plate welded itself to the the steel plate, causing he intermediate clutch (second gear) to be applied all the time, regardless of gear shift position.

Stupid question, but did you check that when the shifter moves in the truck it is moving on the trans?
