Default 4.2 to 4.6 Swap

I have a 2000 F150 with a 4.2 5 speed, and I am looking to make the change to a 4.6. I have acquired a 98 F150 with the 4.6 with an automatic. I know about the wiring changes and plumbing changes. What I don't know about is the 5 speed trans. I have read too many different accounts on whether or not the M5R2 will bolt up to the 4.6. Some have said the the bell housing bolt pattern is different, others have said it will bolt right up. None of what I have read or heard has come from anyone that has actually done the swap. Are there any veterans out there that can share the correct info?

The 5 speed is specific to whether its for a 6 or 8 they don't mix.

Only way to bolt the 4.6 to the M5OD is to get a 4.6 V8 out of a truck that had the M5OD.

While a little rare, they did exist in the 97-03 gen.

That is the info I have been looking for!!! For a follow up, is the M5OD the only trans that'll work for this application? Or is there another one that I can look for that would fit without a whole lot of modifications? I have the shortbed version, and would like to avoid having to get a custom driveshaft if possible..

So, the 4.6 with an automatic trans has a different bolt pattern on the back of the block than a 4.6 out of a vehicle with a manual trans?

That's correct.
