2013 Ecoboost or 5.0L V8 ?

PCRogers, I ran a full tank of fuel through my 5.0 with a 3.73 diff. Drove from west central Mn to Duluth Mn and back on the tank, about 400 miles round trip. Dash said 18.9 and the calculator said 18.3. I only have 780 miles on the new truck. Reset the trip meter for local driving and the dash now reads 13.8. I drive 2 miles to work. It can only get better. Hope this helps.
I wonder if it would be even better with a 3.55, or would that kill the acceleration?

3.73 gives that motor the lift it needs on the down low. Don't try and economize when you are looking for power.. they are on opposite sides of the equation and always will be. Economies are best found in driving style.

I've averaged 16.5 this summer with E-85. Mostly 20'ish mile round trips to town (60 mph) and back plus some in town driving. It's a small town so it isn't a lot of stop and go like a big city. 2011 SCREW 5.0l with 3.73's.

When I ran gas I got about that but my driving conditions were a little different. I drove a few miles further but had less traffic in the mornings. Highway I could get 22mpg but with little headwind and no real traffic. I did some comparisons when I first switched over and it was a toss up. Now it plays in my favor because the cost difference is now greater. I did do a day of Kansas City driving and with the corn my mpg was around 12.

I'm really on the fence.
I drive a lot of highway miles, my 98 F150 4x4 off road has over 250,000 and gets almost 15 averaging 72 mph. But it won't last forever. Only gripe is the gas tank isn't very big - 300 miles and I'm gettin' nervous for gas.
I rarely tow anything.
I drove an FX4 eco the other day and was very happy EXCEPT: it seemed to stumble pulling out the driveway of the dealership and a little bit from a stop sign. Got back in my 97 Chrysler minivan, hit the gas to go and about squealed the tires.
And, I've heard the horror stories about turbos going out. If I like the truck I probably will keep it for a long time, so the maintenance thing is a concern.
Wish I could get a real mileage comparison between the 5.0 and the eco (without the BS meter showing up in the RED).
You guys must know different dealers than I do; they don't seem to want me to spend a lot of time driving & thinking or comparing multiple trucks. They prefer to pick one truck and then SELL it to me. TODAY.
Anyone expecting any significant change in this dilemma with the 2014 models?
thanks.

This is a trip on I-70 in Missouri so some rolling hills (87 reg gas). Could have got up to 22 if the land was flat but I doubt I would ever get 23 or better over a distance.
