His Mustang has a V6 in it. I hope he doesn't tow anything with the Mustang. Oh wait it has a bigger V6 than the F-150 which is good because displacement matters. I'm soooo confused...

Who's mustang? His if you are referring to mine, it is the wife's baby. No nothing gets towed with the mustang. It is just funny when comparing the towing, torq and hauling between the two 3.5L V6 and 5.0L V8 F150s. There is not a huge difference in numbers. Oh wait we are using the same numbers that the factory provides, just like with MPG that no one is really matching with what is averaged. There are different combinations with engines, gears and body styles. Can't compare yours to mine. Correct me if I am wrong please. The thread started out talking about which f150 and now you are talking about another vehicle that is in our family. Why not talk about my waverunner too? You are a joke man.

I too tow a lot with my truck. I have a 23 ft center console boat and an enclose car hauler that I pull. I had an ecoboost and it pulled them both very well, when it ran correctly. I got between 10.5 and 12 mpg towing them on the interstates that I drive with my Eco. I traded it on a 5.0 after a lot of issues with my Eco. I agree that the Eco won't downshift as far down the gear box as the 5.0 to pull the hills. But... My 5.0 is getting a consistent 13.4-15.6 mpg in comparison to the Eco pulling the two. Places where my Eco downshifted to 5th to pull a hill the 5.0 goes to 4th.
My Eco was geared at 3.73 and the 5.0 has a 3.55. I would say that in my own experience the Eco did better around town but my 5.0 gets better mileage on the interstate, and in towing. Also, when in tow haul stopping is much easier with the 5.0. The engine didnt seem to help slow down as much with the Eco as the v8. I think they will both do the job, I just had one of the bad ones. A test for me was getting onto the interstate near where I live pulling the car hauler. At the end of the ramp I was usually running right at 70 mph to merge with the Eco. The 5.0 does the same for me, it just does it without shifting out of 4th gear until I let off.

Additionally, when the 5.0 downshifts further and more often, it is because you are harder (necessarily) on the gas pedal. Simply, it will gulp more gas. The more downshifts, the more pedal, the more gas. You will also be pushing into the throttle far deeper to get up to speed, pull hills and generally accelerate even when flat... all of this gulps additional gas.
The 3.5 is better compared with the 6.2. The 5.0 is a nice base engine for those that want light duty or to drive as a car.
To the OP, if you are on the fence between a V8 and the 3.5, look to the 6.2, drive them both and make the decision you will be happy with.

I call shennagins. Not possible that the 5.0 will accelerate the way the 3.5 will. The TQ curve tells the story. It is factual data that cannot be argued whether anyone is trying to justify a purchase or preference.

Ecoboost or 5.0L
But because of hearing some horror stories re: the ecoboost, I'm leery of dropping that kind of money on a truck that has a real potential for problems. If I knew for sure there wouldn't be issues with the engine, I'd definitely go for the ecoboost. (And if my dad didn't tell me I was crazy for considering the ecoboost, I'd have already placed and order for a new truck). Now I'm just sitting here trying to decide what way to go, and I may just have to way for the 2015 models and hope they don't have problems.........but then being a totally new redesign, they will probably have issues for the first couple of models (but I would hope they would have the ecoboost problems fixed by then).
