"and said she heard the knock when I dropped off the truck"......that is what will save you. the gal! I spent a year arguing with Ford until they hired a woman service manager. I had a new engine as soon as she got involved!

Well went and picked up my truck and the lady service manager said they couldn't get it to make any noise I had described when I picked it up I had a nother service manager listed to it and he said he could hear a faint tap noise or something then I ask him why the mechanic that had run test and listed to the truck couldn't hear anything so I guess my battle continues I Gona try and video the truck making the noise knock and email it to them and even tho I have sent the Ford service folk on this site a pm haven't heard anything from them yet guess next time I buy a new truck it will be a Toyota Tundra

Is this still an ongoing problem with the 5.0 through 2017 or was it fixed?

Well, I'm back...... Finally the knocking got loud enough that it was almost embarrassing!
I have 75,000 miles on my lariat and the noise (knocking/ticking) started at 45,000 and took it in several times and of coarse it wouldn't make the noise for the service dept UNTIL all of my warranty and extended warranty all ran out! THEN they heard it!
Well I had enough..... took it in and they pulled the valve covers off and stuck a scope in the cylinders and on #8 was a big gouge with a few other tiny gouges. They said ring might have broke not sure but that was where the problem was at for the noise!
The fix...... short block!
I asked them for pictures of the engine after torn apart especially #8 cylinder..... said they couldn't get a good picture but the reason for the ring failing was the #8 was "OUT OF ROUND" cylinder, towards the bottom! Just as previous post on this subject noted.
Funny they could get me pictures of the gouges but not the torn down motor and the out of round cylinder!
Anyways, I asked that this new short block, have they made any changes to it to correct the problem of the cylinder going out of round? All they can verify was the item # of the new short block was a different # from the block that was in my truck now so that means they changed something. What, they don't know.
So, tomorrow I can pick up the truck and will see in time I guess. They give 3 year unlimited mileage warranty on the short block.
IF this engine does it again, (and I have ALWAYS been a faithful FORD owner) THIS WILL BE MY LAST!
Thought I would pass this on to you all that still have that knocking noise, hope you have better luck! Keep after them if you still have warranty!!!!

Back from picking up the truck...... the service Tech said that the short block they received and installed has been changed/modified from the original block... especially around the #8 cylinder.
Said they modified it and "beefed up" the area around cylinder #8 to keep it from warping and going "out of round"!
Got the fingers crossed!
Time will tell!
Everyone have a good day!

Default Just out of warranty :(

Has anyone had any luck getting any help on getting one of these fixed out of warranty? I bought my truck from the original owner and had the 60mo 100k ESP transferred to me. I'm now just at 95k miles but the ESP has expired by time.

He said they he had taken it to Ford for the tick and they said it was normal. I bought the truck in 2015 with 50k miles. It never concerned me being that he had it checked at Ford has always done it off and on but it was fairly quiet. However, in the last few months (of course since the warranty expired), it has become much more pronounced. It is much louder now and it does it much more often. It used to just be when it was warm at idle, now it's pretty much ticking constantly at idle.

When driving, the truck runs great. I change the oil myself every 5k with Motorcraft 5w20 and Motorcraft filter and it NEVER uses a drop of oil and oil always looks clean when I change it.
