How modular is the 4.6L?
 
Howdy,

I have an '06 F150 4x4 STX with the 4.6L V8. The truck is in pretty good shape but it gets used hard. Down the road I think that my budget will call for an engine replacement over a new truck. I am curious if any of the Mustang configured 4.6L engines will swap into the F150? Will the F150 mounts bolt up to the Mustang 4.6L block? Will the PCM and ECU connectors connect directly without any major head aches? I am assuming that the Mustang configured 4.6 would fit into the larger engine bay of the truck...

I'd like to hear what any of you may know or may have done to make this work. I'm just looking down the road towards when it needs a new power plant. I am hoping I can drop in a more potent version of the 4.6L, hence the reasoning of a Mustang version, be it a 3V or a 4V variant.

Just use a truck intake with or without the PI adapter here is the adapter source thanks to terajerame, http://www.hiperformancesolutions.com/order_page.html. Windsor engine has a 8 bolt crank, Romeo has a 6. All you need is a truck flexplate that has 6 or 8 holes to bolt to your respective engine. Nothing else needs to be done either will bolt to your trans the same way. As explained above, use the exhaust manifolds that match the year of the truck if you are using the same existing exhaust system. If you are changing exhaust systems then use what ever and have a shop fabricate it to match your manifolds,

There is a lot of work involved changing a engine but it's not rocket science, pretty straight forward. Just pay attention to the way everything is hooked up before removing (take pictures). You will fumble through a few things but thats how you learn. I usually do everything by myself but having someone to help can make a world of difference.

I realize this is a OLD post but it just made me think. Will the head's off same year Mustang fit the F-150 4.6 and if so would there be a noticable difference in power and or torque. Everyone here is knowledgeable, way more than me! So thanks everyone. I really like the positive feedback I received with each question I've asked

Cannot help you on the mustang heads but I know I used a engine from a 2003 Grand Marquis that I stripped to a long block and installed the truck intake and exhaust and it worked fine. Mine is a 2004 F150 Heritage (2003 leftover). been running it for 8 years now.

Im not aware of any 4.6 heads not fitting other 4.6 blocks. The cam profiles will be different so different power/torque curves. Some of the heads did have different bolt patterns for the valve covers.

Interesting. I'll have to just do a bit of investigating to see if it's how I wanna go in the future. Thanks folks :thumbup:
