5.4 3 valve camshaft
Hey guys, my motor smoked the camshaft. A roller follower went bad and wasted one lobe on the cam. I'm about to remove the cam and replace the oil pump, tensioners, follower and camshaft.
My question is....
can I have the camshaft polished? Its just rough, not chipped or melted.
or, where is the best place to get a replacement cam? its $250 at Ford or $120 for a aftermarket at Rockauto.
Also, I'm concerned with fitment of a new cam in my 106k mile head.

I'd get the new Ford part. As far as fit, it wouldn't worry me. The cam journals are about the last thing to wear out in an engine, and if anything the new cam is going to fit closer to original spec. than the old one. Use a good quality lube on the lobes (I like Lucas assembly lube) and take it up to about 2200 rpm for 20 min as soon as you stsrt it.

I got the Ford cam, Melling high volume pump and all metal tesnioners. Progress has been slow. It's so hot in FL I don't want to work in the driveway
Got the new cam and oil pump in. Then I timed the engine, and put the new tensioners on. All that's left is to install the rockers and put the covers on.
