2010 5.4 3V Idles like a Diesel and idle erratic
My 5.4 is sometimes idling like a diesel...especially in traffic or going through a Drive-thru.
It's fine on the highway...lots of power...just at times idles like a diesel until I give it gas to settle itself.
It also will intermittently idle high momentarily after putting it in Park and letting go of the gas pedal...not sure if both are related.
I already replaced both VCT solenoid last October and the issue was still there. Ive been living with the diesel noise all winter and now I'm getting sick of it.
Could it be Cam Phasers or Chain thighteners?
See the videos attached.

Our knocked like a diesel not long after we got it. It was louder underneath. I replaced the VCT solenoids which didn't help. It got to the point it wouldn't stay running at idle at a stop light. Also at highway speeds, if we left off momentarily and stepped back in the gas there was no power. I did the cam phasers, chains, tensioners, & chain guides fixing the problem. One of the cam phasers fell apart after removing it. Truck runs good since.

It's worth the money.
Should fix the issue.

Truck runs like a charm now.
Replaced all timing components.
Chains, tensioners, guides and Phazers.
Driver side tensioner seal was broken leaking oil.

Have fun doing the work. I was doing the same thing last weekend. I followed you tube videos as I did it. However, I didn't isolate the passenger side cam and when I removed the tensioner (to replace the plastic junk with a cast iron ratchet tensioner) the passenger side cam rolled about an 8th of a turn ccw. This up coming weekend will again be spent under the hood re-setting the damn timing from the bottom up. I've always loved ford trucks, but the engineer that came up with the modular motor idea needs his *** kicked. Ford dropped the ball when they did this.
