Default 2016 F150 5.0 Oil Consumption

Hey guys,

I'm driving a 2016 5.0 and I'm having oil consumption issues. Had my oil changed by the dealer at 18k and it was filled properly. At 28k the low oil pressure light came on to find no oil on the dipstick. The truck was down to 1liter of oil. No signs of a leak and i cant smell it burning. They put me on the an oil monitoring program, brought it back in today at 29.5k and it was down to nearly the fill line on the dipstick after 1500km, were I was told it's normal to use 1liter per 1500km. Seems ridiculous to me but that's there story. Has anyone else encountered this problem or offer some helpful insight to possible issues. Sorry if I missed any info.

Thanks.

Are you saying you didn't check your oil in 10,000 miles?

Some oil usage is normal.

10,000km
The manual said to change it between 12,000km-16,000km so I thought I was ahead of the game changing it at 10,000km. But yes I didn' check the oil in 10,000km and it used 6 liters in that timeframe

This is from the Ford Owner Website:

Motor oil is your engine’s lifeblood. It lubricates the internal parts, so the engine can run smoothly and efficiently.

Because your engine needs a certain amount of oil to run right, you should check your vehicle’s oil level every time you fill up the fuel tank.

First, driving 6,200 miles without checking your oil is simply irresponsible.

And the reality is that the truck holds 7.7 quarts or 7.3 liters. It's not possible to have run down to 1 liter of oil in your truck without causing major damage, likely very audible damage.

Ford says that using a quart in 1,000 miles is not outside of reason. Some engines do that, some don't.

You proved by your usage that you're right in that guideline, and losing all the oil you did initially was due to your lack of monitoring the oil level. You should check all fluids, and tire pressure, at least monthly.

thanks for the insight I will be checking my oil every 1000km. And for the truck not being able to run that low on oil, the dealership changed it after the issue and that was there measurements, not mine. Guess I'll hope for no internal damage or trade it in before the warranty is done

Sorry but I don't know anyone that checks their fluids/pressures monthly. With today's technologies I think having to check the oil monthly is absurd. Just my opinion as a dad with 3 little kids, I check mine maybe every 5k.

If my under warranty engine burned through that much oil it would get run in to the ground. I change oil when the monitor gets in to the 30% oil life left range. I check the oil level after I change it, slam the hood and forget about it unless the washer fluid light comes on then I might check oil level. The 1500 mile/K limit is an out to hopefully push engines that drink a bit of oil out of warranty. Properly assembled no new engine should drink any oil. Oil consumption is the one emission that is almost impossible to clean up with catalytic converters. They may stay ahead of the game for a while but eventually the cats will fail. Here is the bottom line. If the low pressure light comes on from lack of oil in the pan damage has been done to that engine. It may last another 50,00 miles or another 10, no one knows. If asked why I did not pull over when the low oil pressure light came on it is a simple traffic and or safety reasons did not allow me to. That is an engine that deserves to go bang.

We have a 2019 F150 Screw with a 5.0 L motor and are experiencing high oil usage as well. From my experience, being in sales for over 40 years and driving an average of 60,000 kms per year, my last 5 vehicles have been Fords. A 2003 F150 5.4L, a 2008 F150 5.4L and 3 Edge's (2011, 2014 and 2017). I have put between 140,000 kms and 190,000 kms on each of these vehicles, change the oil every 10,000 kms and NEVER checked the oil in any of them. And I would hazard a guess that at least 80% of the population never check their oil between oil changes.

IMHO, any vehicle that burns a litre of oil in 1,000 kms is broken, or more to the point, an engineering failure.
