Oil filter question
Hi All,
Just got my first F150 about 2 months ago and loving it!
I'll be changing my oil soon so quick question? How easy/difficult is getting to and replacing the oil filter on a 2007 4.2 v6?

My 02 4.2 has a user friendly installation. I use the filter box, fold it into a trough to make sure the oil drips miss the frame. I use the phram filter with the rubber coating for easier hand grip for removal.
Just for the sinics, I'm coming up for an oil change, it will be my 43 change on this engine, thats 215,000 miles on the odometer. Say what you want about Phram filters. PS, I use the standard filter not their high priced ones.

Getting back to my original question...and yes I'll admit it I haven't actually looked at (or can't remember) where the filter is located. I'm at work now and just got thinking about it. I've always changed my own oil (for many cars) so don't really think it will be a big deal...I'm curious is if one can simply (easily) reach in with one's arm and grab it with their hand? Is it easily accessible?

Hi, its me again, the filter is within easy reach. Its just basicaly nut and bolts for this entinre job.
Enter the truck from beneath and behind the right front wheel, 13mm wrench takes out the drain plug.
After struggling to get up, move to the front and using your left hand reach up and remove the filter. Again struggle to get up and its now time to fill the crankcase with the 5W20 oil as is recommended by Ford.
If you use any other weight of oil this conversation is over.

Synthetic is what I'm using, Motorcraft 5W20. Was using Castrol 5W20 most of this trucks life, now Walmart sells Motorcraft cheaper than Castrol. The jug says synthetic, as to actual content, full or partial, I don't know. It works fine. Regular maintenance is the route to go.

As Bill states, synthetic is good stuff. Intended for heavy duty use (towing), and for those that dislike changing oil every 3000 to 4000 miles. Synthetic is good to around 6000 to 7500, depending on your driving conditions and truck use (again, towing).
You'd be wasting your money if you use synthetic and change it every 3000 to 4000 miles unless you're really hard on the truck. If you change every 3000 to 4000, use the Motorcraft semi-synthetic and a Motorcraft oil filter. Can't beat it. And stick to the weight Ford tells us, and Good ol Bill refers to!
