i have a 1998 4.2 5 speed with 206,600 miles. this truck was originally from Canada, so it had the block heater set up. well, it rusted out which cause all my coolant to escape and my engine ran hot. after i replaced all upper engine gaskets, machined the heads, cleaned all internal parts (everything is still original) and a full tune up... this truck runs STRONG. better than when i first bought it. This situation was funny. I had mechanics tell me this truck was over. dead. I did all the work myself, and she runs beautifully.

something about ford trucks, they run forever.

i love both my 4.2... the 02 will smoke the 08... haha
I don't understand. My 4.2 will barely pull our 17' aluminum starcraft with 85hp evinrude on roller trailer to 55mph on flat ground. And you have to keep the torque converter unlocked. I just came back from NC with an '08 4x4 rancher in the back (550lbs) and struggled to maintain 70+ highway speeds. I suppose I could floor it and make it kick down the tranny at 70mph but I am pretty gun shy on winding her out because of the upper intake gaskets.

my 02 pulls a trailor like a mad man..its a shortbed stepside.... its prolly alot lighter...being that the bed is fiberglass... i pulled a case bachoe with it too... but i took it ever so easy and didnt over work the truck at all didnt have to climb any hills i pulled it about 40 miles my teachers truck broke down and we had to get the trailor and bachoe off the road and i hooked onto it just going to easy it off the highway.... and i just kept going.... but like i said earlier i pull the hell out of both of mine

looks like there aren't that many v6 fans at this site...so far I absolutely love my truck. How many miles should I expect from this engine(with proper care)? are there any major recalls or problems that I should be aware of for the 02 v6 manual?

I have a 98 regular cab flareside I bought 2 years ago with a 4.2 and a 5 speed. It had 163,000 when I bought it. Just had a new motor and clutch put in last week with odometer showing 191,200. I don't know the trucks history but it ran strong till 190,000. I work at a Jiffy Lube and have seen a number of 4.2 trucks come through with more miles than mine had. One guy had 290,000 on his and still running strong. Maintenance is the key, and not running it hard all the time. Figure I'll get at least another 150,000 out of this engine. Probably more, since I try to be regular with the maintenance on my vehicles. We have a 2002 PT Cruiser with 192,000 on the clock.

97 xlt extended cab just hit 75k miles. 2 previous owners not sure of their car background knowledge cause most everything was still factory on it when i bought it so i'm trying to catch her up with the times seeing as how its all going at once(ball joints, tie rods, shocks coil pack plugs wires fuel pump). was a summer truck for most its life only hauling a boat had to recently tear down the engine and replace all the gaskets(timing cover leaked, over heated warped the heads also oil pan started leaking...yeah all at once) thank god cause the intake gasket was about to go so luckily i saved the engine from the dreaded hydro lock hopefully i can make her last for years to come!
