2001 F150 4.2 Intermittent Misfire
Just purchased this 2001 Ford F150 4.2 5-speed for my son. I knew it needed some work when we purchased it because it was running a little rough and was leaking water at the top of the intake manifold. But the price was right and the overall condition of the body and interior was good. Fortunately I am good at fixing things and have always repaired my own cars.
Here is what has been done so far:
1. New plugs, wires and coil pack
2. New intake manifold
3. All new gaskets and seals from the intake manifold up including new upper intake bolts.
4. New water pump
5. New thermostat
6. New power steering pump
7. New radiator hoses
8. New radiator cap
Now for the problem. The truck runs great about 1/2 the time. No codes and everything works perfectly and the engine has plenty of power.
The other 1/2 of the time it will run rough and be low on power like it has a miss and the a/c will not work. The fan will come on but it will not engage the compressor. The SES light will come on and my code reader says it is a P0351 through P0360 Ignition Coil A through J primary secondary circuit malfunction. According to my code reader the main reported fix for this problem is to replace the Powertrain Control Module.
Has anyone had a similar issue? If I change the PCM won't I need new keys programmed? Any help or direction you can give me would be great. Just trying to get this truck to run consistently so when my son turns 16 this summer it will be reliable for him to drive.

Sounds like the ac pulley is dirty and getting stuck. Turn it on and run it when this happens open the hood with the ac on and tap the center of the pulley with a hammer. If it starts to spinning you have your answer.

I appreciate the replies.
I am sharing.
My situation is I have an 2004, F150, Lariat, 5.4 triton engine with 200000 miles. The engine has been running rough during excelleration between 40-60 MPH. At first I changed the fuel filter with limited success. With continued problems I checked my alternator, battery, battery cables etc. In an effort to troubleshoot the issue I logged on and conducted s search at the University of You Tube. I found a lot of great info with regards to ignition coil troubles and properly troubleshooting the problem. Turns out that I had two ignition coils misfiring. This was diagnosed with a computer read out borrowed from Auto Zone. Upon identifying the proper cylinders as A-H instead of 1-8 it was evident what my problem was.
Now the real trick was identifying a quality electrical part without spending too many green backs.
Thanks for everyones feedback. I installed 8 new duralast ignition coils. After remove and replace I feel like I am driving a new vehicle again.
Happy trails,
Jeffrey

Please let me know if you found the fix. Thanks!
UPDATE: Well, as it turned out, the PCM needed to be replaced. It was done by a Ford dealership under the warranty I purchased when I bought the truck at a used car dealership. Truck now has 142,000 miles and runs like a champ!

Random engine misfires
so I replaced the canister evap valve thing that sits on the two bolts above the throttle body
25$ part, and low and behold no more random misfires
turns out it was running smooth at high speeds with jerks and misfires at idle and lower speeds because the sensor was sending too much gas fumes or whatever that needed to be burned off at higher rpm’s so the idle would go up and down as well; I spent weeks with anxiety just to figure out that was the problem
it also would take a while to turnover after turning the key, (t t t t t t t t t t t t vroom)
