How good is the ecoboost engine? Its phenomenal. Get it and get a tune. A decent tune eradicates lag and increases economy with the right one.

At the altitude you are talking about, the truck will own the landscape.

I have almost 10k on my 13 XLT SCab 3:55. My truck gets average 16 mpg and I don't try and hyper mile or any of those tricks to brag about fuel economy. It's a truck 6000 lbs with match size 10 ply tires. I live at sea level with the occasional up hill to 2000 to 3000 ft so I cannot comment on elevation economy or performance.
My truck has not given me any issues, yet! This is the first Ford I have owned since 1979 and my previous truck was a 2004 GMC 2500 6L crew SLT that I had several trouble free years with. No comparison on power, Eco hauls the mail! I think Ford has a pretty good motor here, but there is still time to change my mind with mileage.
I have an issue with black soot on my tailpipe and condensation (water) pouring out the tailpipe. Water or condensation is clearly a junk fuel issue and the more corn the put in our fuel supply the worse this is going to get, hence poor fuel economy. Last I knew, internal combustion engines don't run on H2O.
I do question the soot around the tailpipe and I am going to the dealer to find out why. I am impressed with the power this twin screw makes, it's a turbo and you are going to have lag. Roll in and out of the throttle and you won't have any issues. If you mash the gas you are going nowhere until the rubber band catches up and hang on! On the reverse plan for you stops, if you are into the gas don't expect the turbos to shut down in an instant, I have had issues with turbos on boost and break pressure necessary to wow the load is like there are no breaks until the turbo spools down (rubber band effect with turbos). If you are into the turbo you are not going to get fuel economy short and simple! If you buy EcoBoost I trust that you will be using those twin exhaust screws to get a grin on! I would like to here more about tuning options!

I tow over the pass at bolder Co. with a 6,600 lb trailer with ease with my Ecoboost
never run out of power to call on, I can pull out and pass anyone anytime. I had a 88 F250 with a 460 and 410 gears, My F150 with 3:31 hwy gears will out pull the 460 faster and at much lower rpm. so you aren't screeming your guts out.
both of my friends have other truck, one a dodge with a Hemi & the other a chev with a 5.3 both have smaller trailers and can't keep up if I want to leave them behind. They are both impressed on how easy it pulls long passes at such low RPM.
My advise is go with Ecoboost. I have 72,000ml on mine and it still impresses Me every time I tow.

Default My Eco

I just purchased a new '13 screw platinum 4x4 and it runs strong for a gasser, very happy with the performance so far. My mpg is nothing short of terrible though. I drive about 20 miles each way to work which is not city but not highway either and it is getting 14 mpg. That is not terrible but not good either. Now to my surprise. I leave Colorado with 1600 ish miles on the clock and head for Wisconsin and the best I got was in the 14s at 60-65 mph. Now cruising at the speed limit of 75 mph I am getting in the 12s. I do like to put the pavement behind me when on the highway so on the way home I was running 80-85 mph which is my norm when the speed limit is 75 mph, now I am in the low 10s mpg. This is with about 400-500 lbs of hunting gear in the bed. The computer that shows mpg and gallons used is right on the money every time. So I did not reset it for several tanks full so I can show my dealer now that I am back. For the last 1685 miles traveled between 65 mph and 85 mph I got a terrible 12.3 mpg average. I have an appointment for Monday to take it in and if it is not fixed I will trade it off right away for a Ram with a Cummins. I like the truck but I bought it with the idea it would get around 20 on the highway and mine is nowhere close. I have dealt with Ford many years ago with a bad truck and they did nothing so I hope things have changed as it is very costly to trade in a truck with a few thousand miles. I will let all know of the result.

My 2012 XLT Max Tow 4x4 4:10 gears, all stock will notice a difference between winter and summer fuel, wind direction also makes a big difference.....but in town 14 to 16 mpg, highway 18 to 20 mpg at 65 on cruise. If you are watching the "instant" mpg, you need to reset to zero for each road streatch you want to test. If you don't, you are averaging way too many gallons of gasoline to see a change in mpg. If you want a long time average to "show your dealer" leave either trip A or B alone, not reset to zero to get your average. My truck didn't start to get satisfactory mileage till I had over 5000 clicks on the OD. Only time I get in the 9 to 11 mpg bracket is when I am towing my 27 ft RV trailer at about 10000 lbs. AWSOME TRUCK, couldn't be happier, and I love to SMOKE the Dodge and Chevy boys. Most of them have learned their lesson and don't try any more, but once in a while, one of those boys still wants to try. :-)

Great post. Totally agree.

Regarding tunes, there are loads of threads on the options in the 09-present. If you think your truck is pretty cool now, with the right tune, you will be BLOWN AWAY!

There are tunes for speed/power, specifically for towing, one from one vendor that is for a snow/ice environment, for maximum MPG, etc.

Due to the fact that the EB is a DI turbo engine, tuning can and does make a massive difference in performance. Tune alone, guys are posting numbers like ~400HP/490lbft. The butt dyno says the tunes are even more impressive.

Saw in a Dino test article that running in 3rd to pull torque will overheat the Catz causing back pressure and a drop in power. I'll see if I can find that article.

rrp0968,

If you have some verifiable stats on the percentage of ecoboost engines with this problem please post them up. Also please post them here: https://www.f150forum.com/f102/ecobo...ght=verifiable
rumor and hearsay help no one.

I can guarantee you that I am not spreading rumors or hearsay. My comment was based on personal experience with my 2013 F150 EB that had the condensation in the CAC issue. I gave the dealer ample opportunity to remedy the situation, they changed the CAC to a supposedly new design which did not solve my problem. After about 9000 miles and the truck still having this issue, I traded it for an identical truck with the 5.0L. As far as a percentage of EB Trucks having this problem, I have no idea. My problems my be a direct relation to where I live....which is along the gulf coast in South Louisiana. I do think the EB Engine will be a big part of Ford's future engine lineup.....but they do have some issues to iron out before I would consider another one.
