Are the ‘14 and ‘16 3.5L the same motor?
I have a guy trying to sell me a ‘16 claiming he gets 20 mpg. The absolute best I ever saw with my ‘14 is 14 mpg.
My mileage is a mix of city/highway.
Not sure about his.
But to regularly see 20mpg seems a bit of a stretch to me. Unless it has newer technology.
Let me know your thoughts
Thanks in advance!

He just drives it better than you. Two things that get better MPG with the EB, right foot and where it is driven. I had a 2014 EB and got 20 MPG, and I also had a 2016 that got 18, difference being that the 16 was 4WD, the others 2WD. and my 2018 gets 21 MPG.
Not knocking you either, just pointing out how he is getting better MPG.
If I drove in the city, more than likely the truck would only see 16 MPG.

Tip for getting good gas mileage. Drive one full tank through using cruise control everywhere you go. Hand calculate at the pump to see your MPG. If using the dash, you have to reset the mpg meter at each fillup. Remember, the truck knows how to drive and get better fuel economy than you. You should never really be touching the gas pedal unless you are getting up to your speed.

They are not the same motor. 14 is gen 1 ecoboost, and the 16 is a gen 2 ecoboost. The 15+ engine has dual injection that washes the back of the valves. The 10-14 ecoboost does not have this and the valves build up crap on them. The 10-14 has an intercooler design that was pretty bad and accumulated moisture while driving, On hard acceleration, the engine had misfire. Owners drilled 1/16" weep holes in the lower driver side corner to drain the junk on acceleration to keep it cleaned out. The 15+ had an active shutter system in front of the intercooler to stop this moisture accumulation. All 10-present 3.5 ecoboost have the cam phaser failure problem. This is the cold start rattle and is a $4k job and about 20hrs labor to fix. These really last about an average of 40k miles. Ford has not been able to fix the design.

that is incorrect. gen II did not come out until the 2017 MY.
the 11-16 are the same motor with some minor updating here and there
easiest way to tell...6 spd auto= gen 1
10speed=gen II

You could have 20 identical trucks driven the same way all with the same 3.5 eco engines and I guarantee they will not all get the same mpg.
My previous eco was okay...I think I hit 19mpg a few times but for the most part it was around 17-18 mpg

So much wrong with this info. The gen II eco showed up in 2017 as stated by djfllmn above. Dual injection didn't happen until the gen II motor showed up...in 2017. Valves don't necessarily build up crap as ford has several mitigation methods (for example). The 15+ trucks don't just have louvers, but a completely different intercooler with the outlet pipe high up, not low to gulp fluid. How did THIS truck get to 300k+ plus miles without a new timing system? Driving in the city with cruise control on is a recipe for disaster. Cruise is also not the most efficient way to drive, it will try to hold exact speed up every hill and downshift aggressively to do so...something a person doesn't need to do and and can drop a bit of speed, thereby being significantly more efficient.

Mine gets much better MPG with cruise than if I don't use it. I become more aggressive because I want to maintain a steady speed. Nothing irks me more than when I have to speed up and slow down because someone is not using cruise. If I want to get 18 MPG, I turn off cruise, but I prefer 20-22 MPG so use the cruise. That isn't just the F150, but holds true for my F350 as well.
Anyone who says they can maintain a steady speed without cruise is FOS.
