Default 2013 3.5L ecoboost P054A and P054C codes

I have a buddy who has a 2013 F-150 with the 3.5L eco boost engine. He called me today and said he check engine light came on. He took it to autozone and had them pull the codes. Here is what was pulled:

P054A - cold start “b” camshaft position timing - over advanced - bank 1

P054C - cold start “b” camshaft position timing - over advanced - bank 2

Said he noticed when he was trying to get on highway and had to give it a lot of gas, it felt like the engine was missing. Also said that his fuel economy has been really bad the last couple of weeks.

I asked him if he noticed when the engine was cold or had been sitting overnight if there was rattle noise on start up. He said that he had noticed a rattle sound a few times on start up then it goes away. Said he also gets oil changed when the info center tells him to get oil changed. My guess is the place that preforms the oil change does not use a motorcraft oil filter or motorcraft oil.

From owning a 5.4 3V before myself and having to replace the VCT’s, tensioners and timing chains, could this be the start of the same sort of issue on his 3.5? Or is this something else causing the codes and the missing at higher rpm’s?

I have watched a few videos about the timing chains and tensioners on the 3.5 and saw that the chains were loose or stretched but I was not able to specifically find a lot of info about the codes above.

The truck has just over 85,000 miles on it.

Check engine light is still on, looking for guidance before he takes it in to the dealer or mechanic.

Thanks

i'd have him consider the tensioners as well as maybe seeing if his intercooler has fluid in it.

Failed cam phasers and a stretched chain. $4,000 later, trade it in. This is a major problem with the ecoboost. Even the newer style ecoboost (2017+) still has this issue. Definitely a known issue on these.

I've owned a 2011 3.5L Ecoboost for about 5 years now. I've had spark plugs blow and cause the P054A/C code pop. In addition it runs really rough and misses as mentioned in the first post. Read the codes to figure out which cylinder and pulled the plug. Three have had hairline cracks and the last one had the bottom of the insulator 'charred' where it looks like arcing coming out all the way around. I believe there was a TSB that said replace the stock coil boots with new ones and be sure to use generous amounts of dielectric grease. I did that and replaced all plugs. It ran great for about a year until doing it again. I also replaced a coil on one thinking that was the problem. Seems like these things like to blow the plugs. I haven't found any other issues than the plugs. So now I carry a few spares and code reader.....it's paid off.

i have a 2013 f150, a year ago had a misfire code. Ended up doing the timing chain and all the components that go with it... now camshaft timing advanced p540a/b bank 1 and 2... they are checking the vvt solenoids , waiting to hear about that, but have assured me there is internal engine damage.. ill post when i get the verdict.... hope yours is under warranty.

My 2015 F150 has the same codes and is running a bit rough. Cowles Ford told me it will give those codes when oil is low. Anyone ever heard that before? I have 65k miles and my extended warranty expires at 94k. I just had my alternator replaced a couple weeks ago, broke down on the side of the road. Was out of town with the family. The mechanic found a lot of oil in the intercooler tube he removed to get to the alternator. It was over 2 quarts low but I recently had an oil change less than 4k miles ago. He said I will have problems with the ecoboost soon. Is ford feeding me a bunch of bologna saying low oil will cause those codes? Im thinking timing chain issue and major problems soon...
