Default Stock caps on aftermarket wheels?

Has anyone ever drilled aftermarket aluminum wheels to fit stock hub caps? Seems simple enough, but would it be better to thread the holes, or is if possible to find the plastic inserts that the stock wheels use?

I saw those inserts come up once, somebody posted a part # and all, but I have no idea how to find it. Dorman, Rockauto, broncograveyard perhaps ? Or possibly even Ford. They surprise you sometimes with what you can still get.
Threads in the metal sounds like it will become a problem - crossthreading and such.
