Oil changes with quality oil is very important. I own a 1998 Cavalier I've had pretty much since new and it has 351,000 miles on it. I used synthetic oil and changed it every 5-7k miles. It still runs like new, but it does need valve stem seals, which is minor in my opinion considering the mileage.

Is changing to synthetic fluids better for my 92? What about power steering fluid, I've read lots about it on this forum for automatics but does it change for manual tranny and 2wd?

It's a Canadian thing eh!
Use automatic transmission fluid for the MT if its a 5spd, if its a 4spd I think its gear oil. Also use automatic trans fluid for the power steering. And synthetic won't hurt you're 92.

I change the oil before it turns black! I use synthetic fluids and I change the trans fluid on my POS M5od every year. I change brake fluid every 2 years. I installed REAL mechanical guages alongside the stock idiot senders so I can see what's going on before it turns into a catastrophic event. Whenever I can, I go overboard with any parts I replace, especially if it is a PITA to change. IE...I put a Mustang Racing clutch so I wouldn't have to do it again! I upgraded my oil pump to a hv Melling pump... I use 5/8 inch copper for battery cables so there is almost zero electrical resistance! I have a oil filter relocation kit with 2 filters (Purolator) with particulate magnets on both. I seafoam it every now and then but it is really clean inside after the initial treatment so I just add a half a bottle to a full tank once a year now.
It is not recommended, but every other oil change I add a qt of ATF to the oil and drive it 20 -30 miles before I change it out. If you take the valve cover off my truck it looks like it just left the Ford assembly line...no sludge or gunk anywhere!

An old mechanic taught me when I was young, he would say, "any job, big or small, do it right, or not at all" I try to live by that creed when doing repairs. I think that helps to cause the repairs that I do last longer. I guess that would be my secret, which really shouldn't be one. A pet peeve of mine is wires and hoses hanging around. For god sakes man, secure the dang thing to something so its not flopping in the breeze or subject to vibration and chafing. This is a must on aircraft and I believe it should be on cars as well.

I do a oil change every 5k (dino) with a Motorcraft or Purolator filter. I do the coolant every two years and the brake fluid every five years or if it looks contaminated. I change the diff, PS, and tranny fluid (manual) when purchased and check the level and quality yearly. I hit the zerk fittings when changing oil.
When I had an automatic I would change the fluid every 30k or after hauling the trailer in hot weather.

Regular oil changes and meticulous maintenance records since new...back when it was my mom's DD she actually ran a diesel oil in it (Mystic JT-8). And I change the fluid in my M5OD every month, because it leaks like a sieve from the tailshaft housing.
That, and fixing every tiny little problem right as soon as it pops up keeps it from becoming a POS.
