WTF is the deal with the "300 4.9 I6"
Ive been wondering why and what is the deal and so SPECIAL about the
300 4.9 I6 some of you guys know that my baby is a 1993 Ford F150 XL with the I6 and if i may..lol..im announcing my recent purchase of a 1992 Ford F150 XLT with the I6..5 Speed Manual Trans!!! both trucks are Regular cab..Short bed!! my baby is black the new one is White Well if you guys can school me and teach me what is so special about it! |
Theyre bullet proof and torque monsters.
More torque than the 5.0. Easily reach 300,000 miles when worked hard, as long as they're maintained. I read a few months ago a guy went Mudding. Blew his #5 piston through the block. No oil. And limped the 40 miles home. That is an engine. Still running. Haha. |
technicly, any engine can hit 300k miles "well maintained" my girlfriend owned a 01 cavalier (supposedly one of the worst cars made recently) we sold it with 212k miles to her step brother 2 years ago, it has 250k miles or so on it now and made a trip from Oregon to Alaska no problem. iv had nothing but trouble with the I6 and see them as another engine, nothing special about them. even the "amazing torque" that some people on here preach was laughable lol.

Short version, 20 miles home with no water and it still ran even though the starter melted.

7 thick main bearings on the crank keep everything in balance and it being a low RPM engine and still puts out lots of torque keeps it running allot longer.

I had an F-250 service body, 86 model I think, and it ran great until it was ready for a minor overhaul. Turns out all 6 pistons had cracked skirts which probably made it sound like a diesel. A few hundred bucks later it was up and running again for another 20 years.
They are very tough and hard to blow up unless you modify it enough that it will over rev. |
its one ofthe strongest gas engine ford ever produced, the only other gas engine that beats it is the 460 big block.
no they are not made to be speed demons but for the work world they are the perfect combination of everything, they are still used in industrial equipment today, so that right there should tell you something. |

All I can say is, my '95 I6 was given to me back around '01 and I did nothing to help maintain this engine. I used it like a truck! Very rarely changed the oil, never changed the plugs and I abused the hell out of it making fire department runs flat out squalling tires and driving down some of the worst oil field roads known to man. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I found myself with one vehicle and traveling out of town every week. I had to get it running, so I did the bare minimum. I have three vehicles now, including the broke down Chevy with half the miles, and I've been able to put some funds back into the truck and it runs better now than it did when I got it. I'll put my I6 next to any other engine out there when it comes to smooth running, smooth driving and still able to everything any half ton truck is capable of and IMO, it does it better. My '94 5.0 will never be the truck my '95 I6 is.
