Tonights Trick-Question: Do I have a blown head gasket? Can you guess right?
This trick question is inspired by a recent post on this forum.
A customer presents a truck they recently purchased to you and complains of bubbling/boiling in the coolant reservoir tank after they shut of the engine. Upon inspection of the radiator and the overflow tank they see this:
BROWN "STUFF"!
The car is not overheating, and there is no milky/unusual substances in the oil pan, dipstick, or back side of the oil cap. The substance resembles chocolate milk/mud/gunk... brown in color.
What would you guess the issue to be?

YES!!! WOW you guys are TOO GOOD!!! I thought It would stump more of you!!!
What you see in the PICTURES is what TAP WATER ONLY in your radiator does after a few months!! I've done it myself!
The remedy is a thorough flushing.
The substance that forms in your radiator is this gnarly brown muddish that makes it seem like something VERY serious (head gasket for ex.) is wrong with your engine! But its just what happens in a tap water only cooling system after a while.
THNX for playing - perhaps the info will help someone in the future -- and another bit of knowledge to know when some one get a case of the the head-gasket phobia!
