By no means am I a mechanic but I know my way around. I haven't ever broke down an engine, mostly because I had no reason to, but I have always fixed my own problems when it came to my rides. I just don't want to get into something that I won't be able to finish.
By the way, will changing the fuel pump assembly help the mpg?
Because I'm only pushing about 100 highway miles to the tank.

it probably wont help the mileage, change your fuel filter while you're at it, it might help your mileage. get a haynes or similar manual to help you with your repairs

As long as you can remember how it goes back together then you should be fine. Drop tank, unhook lines, remove pump assembly, not much to it. The worst part is unhooking the lines, you need a special tool and they are sometimes stubborn.

That kind of milage implies a speedo not calibrated to larger tires, a leak, Possibly a bad fuel pressure regulator, or ECT sensor, maybe poor compression. The best place to start would be Error code scans & a compression test to see exactly what you can expect out of it. There are other possibilities as to why the poor MPG, almost all, not hard fixes. But you have to start somewhere. Your running 87 octane right?

For awhile, yes. I'm now putting the middle tier in it, which I believe is 90 or 91 if I'm not mistaken. Could be wrong. After it started to act up I started to put different gas in it.

The computer is calibrated for 87 octane. Any higher is a waste of money.

So, not only have I been wasting extra money, I also could have caused more trouble for my engine. Awesome.
