What do you want out of the truck? More low end, towing, top end etc

Weatherford F150 01-06-2010 10:29 PM

i do alot off hauling and so im kinda looking for low i think maybe thats top end who knos lol i am also wondering if i have to replace the head also or what. This weekend im doing the msd plugs and wire and coil and bumping the timing

jeepfan93 01-07-2010 07:50 AM

towing definetly want low end, I'm thinking maybe a RV cam. Just wondering what cam(s) work with the stock CPU. Again, not to hijack, I used to have a lot of full size Jeeps, all 360 V8'S, and one of the first mods we would do is an ignition upgrade similar to what you guys are doing here. We used the same TFI upgrades same ignition system. Best money we spent was HEI to do away with the ignition control module, but the MSD coil, Large TFI cap, bump timing, plug and wire change really for the money was the best, most reliable spending of money we could do.
Guess what I'm trying to say is go for it, you will not be disappointed.

ok thanks but one more question when replacing the cam what else will i have to replace, and hydrolic of flat i want what ever will take the least tear down cuz this is my daily driver

farmer12 01-07-2010 11:55 AM

You could easily do this in a weekend if you get all your parts around. When you do a cam you always change lifters, that motor should have hydraulic flat tappet lifters. But its possible you have a roller setup, I doubt you do but Ford did put roller cams in some of the 5.0 truck motors. Call up comp cams and talk to a tech and tell him what you have and what your looking to get out of it and they would be able to get you a good setup that should work well.

Does your truck have a distributor or coil packs?

Weatherford F150 01-07-2010 06:56 PM

it has the distributer with the single coil

Do as Farmer said and call comp cams...

Be rady for a bunch of Questions like...

Is you truck MAP (Speed Density) or MAF (sequential MPFI) the key is if you have a MAF sensor....

you also want to know what size tires you have and what rear end gears...that info on the gears is on the tag on the cover...

other questions should be simple...

they will give you the optimum choices to achieve your goal...

things you will need....

Cam and lifters.....

Break in lube (and a bottle or 2 of ZDDP additive for cam break in)

Timing chain and gears...you gotta take it off why not replace it..

Front seal...again the cover is off why not...?

Intake Manifold gasket set...you gotta pull it to replace the lifters...

Antifreeze and oil and filter...

An option is the oil pan gasket...you can do the swap just taking teh front of the pan loose and let it hang on the bolts...but if the gasket is old and squishy I would just change it....

which also necessitates dropping the exhaust... which in itself can be fun if the manifold bolts are rusty.....

Do yourself a favor and upgrade your Ignition system &/ a timing bump first. You might forget all about the cam & if not, they'll complement each other!
