Anything is possible, but I doubt it would pay off in the long run.

Programmer would be better but it'd be best to do after you get it breathing freely

Long as you have a OBII port then you can do it.

If your truck is one II being a 96 you wouldn't require a chip, but could tune thru the obd II port with the right equipment. There is a little performance to be gained from tuning as some of the stock settings are conservative. Depends on the cost of the equipment before I would recommend. Normally one tunes after major motor mods.

In 95 and before MAP engines the computer has a set way that the engine is going to run. Cant change it, thats the way it is.

MAF adjusts fuel trims to a certain degree. Basically until you start adding boost.

OBDII is the same way(im 99.9% sure theyre all MAF)

So OBDII will adjust as needed.

If you want to spend a week without your truck, switching computers and the entire engine harness with that of a MAF OBDI(94 5.0), then you can add upgrades to the engine. If not. Youre SOL.

Now. My 5.8 has 195,000 miles. Ive heard that theyre good for 250-300. I think by the time i have 250 ill have enough money for a decent engine rebuild. Including MAF conversion, or maybe a nice little supercharger, heads, cam, all the fixins. Hopefully push 375 min HP.
