I didnt think I had one one there... well I am trying to figure it out with spending as little as possible... when I changed all of them parts in the past, the truck actually ran much better than when I bought it... and I would get an OBDI reader if I had the extra money right now... btw... that link is broke... I dont remember but will my year truck do the key/light trick???

Go to stickies and look for how to retrieve trouble codes, grab a paper clip and start counting.

I don't like doing that so I plan on getting a OBD-1 and OBD-2 code reader one with both readers in one.

My school has a snap-on code reader that I use and it's a lot nicer then the paper clip method. The paper clip gets the job done but the code readers a lot easier then counting flashes.

I have used a test light and such and counted the flashes and here is what it came up with the first part of key on engine off:
22 - Manifold Absolute Pressure out of range
67 - Neutral Pressure Switch (NPS) circuit failure
52 - Power steering pressure switch open

and memory area with code 22 again and 29 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) problem in which I have had trouble with my speedometer jumping around from time to time and the ABS light has always been on in my truck...

I have not tried the key on engine on yet because I had to go get a new bulb for my test light since I dropped it... storm suddenly popped up and had to close everything in a hurry... go figure...

so any more ideas? would the MAP be causing all of my issues or do I need to try the other as well... any thoughts?

update! I went and got the bulb for my test light and went ahead and bought a MAP sensor to try... I hooked it up and immediately fired up and ran pretty decent... there was still some changes in RPM but ever so slightly... I decided to go ahead and pull the neg batt lead to reset the PCM so I can start fresh tomorrow in the daylight... hopefully that fixed most of my issue... I will let y'all know tomorrow if everything goes right... thanks for everything so far!

since my check engine light does not work on the inside (I know there is one cause I saw it when my dash was apart a while back and checked all the bulbs), I am going to rig a light on my dash and have it where I can either have it permanently hooked up or plug it in as needed... maybe switch controlled... any thoughts about that?

'87 doesn't have a check engine light. It has a spot for one but the factory didn't use it in '87. I wired mine to work.

I got the code reader ( Equus 3143) that was linked to Amazon a couple of weeks ago for about 12.00 - 13.00 $ It's just a simple thing where you count the flashes.

The real asset is the booklet that comes with it. There's a lot of useful information in there for someone like myself that's new to it all.

Depending on the year & model there are more tests you can do besides KOEO & KOER with it.

Might be worthwhile.

Sounds like you are on the right track.

Now get the KOER codes. Fix those first and then move on the KOEO code.

Keep us updated

was the wiring already there or did you have to wire it to the harness in the engine bay???
