Default Transmission’s

I have an 96 F150 4x4. The transmission code on door vin is Trans U. I have two other 4x4’s a 95 and an older one a 91. Both transmission codes are E. what is the difference and are they interchangeable? I want to replace the trans in my 96 (U) with the E transmission from the 95 as rust was not kind to it. Is it doable?

The U is a 4R70W and the E is an E4OD, later called 4R100. I believe they will interchange but I'm not 100% certain. The 95 is closer to your year and the one I would go with, hopefully the electrical plugs are the same. I think you have to also use a shorter drive shaft, the one out of the donor truck should work if it's the same wheelbase. I'm sure others will chime in with better info than I have, good luck.

If the wheelbase of both trucks are identical than it should work
