They make an adapter to convert the round plug into the 4pin flat trailer plug you can get them at most part houses or off Ebay for around $10-$15.

It may be like a semi plug but some of the F150's with the towing package have them. I have seen a couple of the older lightning with this type of connector on them.

Not since the 90's I believe. Haven't seen one on the road in forever.
