Your truck weighs about 4000 lbs. The usual max combined weight is about 10,000 lbs.
A 5 to 6000 lb trailer can be pulled, but your driveline will be working hard and your brakes will be working harder. A 3000 - 3500 lb trailer would be a lot easier to work with.

A slightly overloaded travel trailer would be fine towing short distances so long as it could be done in as safe a manor as possible. I would still try to upgrade the safety features like the brakes and anything else that would help me not be a statistic in a state trooper's briefing.
I agree with this. Ive had over 10,000lbss behind my truck, but when I pull that much I do it at a time with few people on the road. Im planning on buying a camper soon, hopefully a around a 30 ft fifth wheel. I want to keep it no more than 7,000 lbs dry, so it may be around 8500 lbs loaded. I wont move it but a few times a year. But know, If your truck is overloaded and you get in a wreck, even if its not your fault you can be SOL. so, be smart. Smartest thing Is not overloading the truck, but I do time to time. I have a 96 5.8 ext cab with 3.55 gears btw.

I was contemplating just upgrading to a truck made for pulling like some diesel trucks with a nice 7.3 turbo powerstroke with a 4.10 rear axle and... well, you get the gist. I think upgrading the safety features would be a more realistic approach. Brakes and possible airbags in the back are a given, but what else should I focus on, and which would be priority number 1?

If you get the first series of the power stroke, make sure you upgrade the brake system. My step dad's 94 feels really spongy. Other than that I love those style trucks.

If you're selling one, I'll take it. But being on a college budget, it'll have to be for cheap. Maybe 500 bucks and a case of beer?

Shoot. I'm trying to con my step dad out of his dually 7.3 with a 5 speed. He's not having it. Lol. The 7.3 can get expensive really quick with it not having a common rail fuel system. That's why I suggested the 6.0. Just delete all the emissions crap and bulletproof it. After those two things you're into it for 3k +the cost of the truck. Most people are scared of the 6.0 based off of rumors.

I stumbled upon a 7.3 turbo IDI turbo on craigslist for 2 grand. Seemed like a great investment since it's only got 150,000 miles. Catcher is that it runs rough. Talking to the guy, i figured it is either his IDM or high pressure pump and I can't take a gamble like that, since the pump is quite a bit of money. So I'm sticking to my ole blue for now. I'm hoping to buy a camper and travel around. Just need to "beef" it up with safety features so I don't break down a few states away.

Look it over really well before you write that 7.3 off. Have they been putting treatment in the fuel? The injectors will sound horrible after a while with no treatment in the "ultra-low sulfer" diesel fuel. we run a quart of oil in a buddy's truck because it's cheaper than the other additives.

He said he was not going to take the risk and get it. I have 2 OBS 7.3s and they work flawlessly, I have pulled a 28ft gooseneck with 12,000 lbs on it and she pulled it like a dream. I have nothing bad to say about them!

I talked myself out of it, but now you guys are making me question whether I made a mistake or not

We'll see if it's still available after taxes come back and I have a little more room for budget.
