The wires that controll my tranny a e40d in my 92 f150 were melted against my headers.i assume, causing them to be grounded. i think that that had my converter locked up because, when i stopped from 60 mph at aredlight i heard and felt a loud bang, very loud! then the truck hesitated to engage drive but then it took off ok i went 50 yards to first parking lot.to see what broke, i thought a spring or the whole rear end broke but not. i checked fluid in tranny everything seamed ok but as i slowed it shuddered bad and1 or 2 seconds after stopping the loud bang again it shuddered on take off in drive also but shifted fine, i had to go on so when i had to stop i put tranny in nuetral to stop and that that kept it from banging and shuddering. I also shifted manually from 1 -2 to drive home and did for a week or two around home. The tranny still works it has the same issuse and sounds like a blender full of marbles . its amazing that it would even move considering the grinding it does. Based on what i learned from reading every transmission issue post here i think a new torque converter may fix the problem. seams if the harness grounded my coverter would have been locked when i stopped correct? but any ideas would help i cannot afford a tranny i bought one from a running truck but got a aode so unless i can swap some it for a a40d onre im stuck. one more question is the torque converter from the aod the same as mine both same year, mode;l ect... let me know if possable my truck makes me a living and im geting hungry..i did repair the harness and chged fluid.

since you replaced the wires and it is still bad looks like it is time to source out a new trans. you can try a new converter first but i'm leaning more towards the whole trans needing worked over.
