I was having the same exact problem. My cousin is a master mechanic, and he told me it was clutch related. My clutch wasnt bad he just gave it a charge with freon and it doesnt make that click anyore constantly. He told me your still going to have a click every once in a while but nothing like it was. But i dont use my ac that much i prefer 50 mile an hour air my self, but in my opinion i would try charging it before you go buy a new clutch.

Thanks for all the great responses guys Much appreciated, won't have the cash to mess with it for a while, more important repairs to look into, but I wanted to get a leg up on the situation. Will post back with my findings, if it's fixed, and how when I get around to doing it

If it gets annoying unplug the power to the compressor. The only wires going into it then tape off the female end of the plug to prevent dust and moisture from getting in and corroding it.

I can't hear it in the cab at all Just know it's not supposed to sound like that and wanted to make sure my A/C system wasn't going to grenade

I have an 89 F150 with the 4.9, and I have a bad a/c pulley bearing, and mine is making that noise too. The clutch works ok, but the bearing is getting really noisy. If you want to check out your pulley, just remove the belt and turn the pulley by hand and see if it's turning smoothly. At the same time, you can check the compressor smoothness by turning the inside part manually. It turns easily and you'll be able to see if the bearings feel ok in that part too. I'm getting my pulley bearing replaced this week, and I'll let you know if that clicking is gone. I don't want any pulley problems, where I lose the belt and do other damage.
