That seems to be the idea that I have gotten from reading stuff around the ultraweb. I haven't been able to find a Motorcraft 195 thermostat though. Any ideas on where to get one? The MC option at Rockauto is a 190, but it also says that it's NOT the manufacturer recommended temp. Any other suggestions on a solid brand for this?

A few years ago, I tried a 160, a 180, and back to a 195 in my '96 4.9. Without any doubt, the truck runs better with the 195. I wouldn't worry to much about the brand unless your "brand name buyer". I bought the Duralast one at Auto Zone and it's worked fine.

Using a 180 would almost certainly result in lowered mpg's.
Thanks. I'll throw away the 180 degree thermostat. I wonder why they gave me a 180 degree when I asked for a standard degree thermostat? I didn't know what degree the factory thermostat was at the time I bought it Now I do
