Default Strange noises in 4x4

I just replaced the u-joint, driver's side and when I put it in 4L and 4H in a parking lot, I got this noise and bumping turning L&R. NO noises in 2H or 2L. The U-joint was in perfect shape when I installed it. I can't imagine getting something wrong but obviously it's not right. Any ideas? 1989, F-150, 4x4, 5.0L, Automatic

Yep - agree with the above two posters.

The front end will make its displeasure known if not allowed to slip a bit here and there. Lurching, surging, and a lot of gruntin'-n-groanin' are typical on dry pavement.

I'm amazed! Simple, elegant solution. Thanks for the wisdom from across the country. This forum is great!

Do you guys know whats involved with replacing front axel seals at the front axel differential?

Eh, haven't been challenged by that opportunity yet. Suggest to lay hands on a good shop manual - Chilton's, Haynes, etc. - and go from there.

As I get older, my philosophy is becoming - adding oil is relatively cheap and easy in the scheme of things. :-)

In Seattle we've got snow, slush and ice which is unusual but becoming increasingly usual. With my hubs locked manually, turning corners, L&R, in 4H and 4L I get a real loud squeak as the wheel goes round. Things are good on the straight ahead.

I replaced the front calipers a week ago but didn't use anti-squeak stuff on the pads nor did I replace the thin steel shims behind the pads. Could that explain the squeak?
I put in new pads but they didn't come with new thin steel shims. Also, I replaced the anti-rattle clip on the bottom of the inboard pad but it doesn't seem to fit very precisely.

Ideas? Thanks.
