I have the same issue in my 96. I'm replacing the entire gearbox from a place called RedHead Gearboxes out of Seattle. They custom fit the ball bearings to make sure there is absolutely no chance for play (just in case anyone else has this problem).

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but...

Where did you get the replacement rag joint? Do they sell just that part? Or did you have to replace the entire steering shaft?

I think I have this same problem on my 96 F150.
