Best Bang for the buck, 302 or 351
I have a 95 f-150 2wd that i am getting ready to fix up. I have had the truck for 6 years 2nd owner when i got the truck it had 150k, i will be getting to 230 with in the next couple weeks. I am looking at rebuilding it and turning it into a hot rod. I want to keep it EFI and automatic because it is just a regualar cab. I would like to get about 350 hp out of it when it is all said and done. Just wondering if it is best to rebuild 302 or build up 351. Whats gonna be easier and cheaper.

Springer Spaniels Rule
Dont matter, parts are basically the same price, if looking for power and torque and dont care about mileage, go with the 351. Everything will bolt up from a 302 to a 351, but after 30 yrs of putting Ford motors that dont belong in the vehicle I put it in, I am still confused with flywheels. Get the flywheel\flexplate that goes with the motor to be safe. Also depends carb\efi.

This is the base of anything else you might even think about doing.http://fullsizebronco.com/forum/show...ht=timing+bump Ignition upgrade, timing bump & gap stretch. "The" best bang for your $150. unless you upgrade to MSD Superconductor wires (I would/ they'll outlast any other plug wire & they are the best)

keep the 302 and put a 347 Eagle stroker kit in it...only 500.00 for that and buy a nice set of heads...the Trick Flow New Twisted Wedge are sweet...
that would be one bad *** ride and run circles around a 351 while getting better gas mileage...

These are all fine ideas, however does your truck have MAF or MAP? Stroking it and putting in new heads won't help you that much unless it's MAF. And remember there's no replacement for displacement and if you're looking to get 350 hp, I'm guessing MPG is way down at the bottom of your list so either stroke it, add a turbo, or put in a 351.....all of those are going to thin out your wallet at the pump. I think stroking it is the way to go if you're on a budget, but I'd be surprised if you got 350 hp at the wheels.

MAF will have one of these between the air filter housing & air intake: http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=26

big MYTH...on MAP sytems
you can do anything with either...just MAF is more user friendly..meaning stupid people can tune them where as MAP isnt that case and you MUST tune the ECM for the combo UNLESS the new engine has the same or close BSFC...
the characteristics are the SAME for EVERY engine...the only thing that changes is the injector size...as long as the same spec cam is used as factory the ECM does NOT know the size of the engine it controls...
if map was that hard then a 460 wouldnt work in theory right...only difference is injector size and maybe the timing table...but even that is doubtful

I've often wondered this, I've seen the custom chips on Summit........you tell them what you've done to the engine and they whip out a chip curtailed to fit your mods..........i'm skeptical of this. so I have a 302 and i tell them I put trick flow heads on it, a comp cam, headers, etc. and they somehow have a mathematical formula to figure out exactly how to program the mixture, timing advance, etc. in order to make the most power out of what I have? maybe I'm over thinking this but it doesn't seem like they would have the capability with so many different possible combinations of performance parts. maybe they just make a guess i don't know......am I completely wrong here?
