The ECT out of range was a stored code, so it's a fault that happened while running but not because it wasn't warmed up for the test.

thanks for the reply sean.

went and did the jumper wire suggestion to no avail. Then figured i'd rather replace a 15$ relay and be wrong than anything else, now the pumps won't prime at all (before i did the relay as well) neither pump primes. Thinking it's the pumps because i was just recently (as of lastnight) told that they were pressure checked and he was told that the readings were "weak", so i am guessing that the pumps were on their way out anyway. Another thing, considering the man who told the owner of the truck that the pumps were weak, is also the man who hooked up his "computer" to something under the hood and told him that one of the eleven MAP sensors were out. kind of made me laugh. on another note, the same guy told him that he ran the "numbers" on the heads and they came out to 302 heads. hence, he put a 302 MAP sens. on it. something to fix at a later date... amongst my ramblings, sounds like the pumps, right? or might it be the ECU? once again, any help is appreciated.

First off, was that you that left me an offline message on my instant messenger? I'm not too swift with the computer and after reading it I figured I could go back to it. Well I was wrong and couldn't find it or even remember who it was from.

11 MAP sensors? Boy that guy must have been REALLY drunk. So you jumped the fuel pump and it didn't run. Did you also check the inertia switch? One other thing before changing the fuel pumps would be a bad ground to the pumps. I'm not sure how far from the fuel tanks they are grounded. If you were pulling the pumps anyway then you can test them out of the tank too, just to make sure. After removing them you can hook the positive and negative directly to the battery. I always do this just to check after removal. Just give the gas some time to evaporate off the pump to minimize the chance of starting a fire. I've never caught one on fire... yet.

The inertia switch is inside the cab on the firewall above the brake pedal. In the event of an accident (or sometimes a hard bump) it trips cutting the power to the fuel pumps. It resets like a circuit breaker, just push the button.

no, that wasn't me. lol and about the inertia switch, i know what it is because my escort has one, and again thank you, because i didn't realize these trucks had one, and now another thing i can check. about the pumps, when i test them out of tank, is it ok to let them pump air like that? or should i submerge them in gas? dumb question i know... but how else am i supposed to learn? lol about the ground, i tried looking for the ground on the pump from underneath the truck but to no avail.


and about the 11 MAP sensors, you're telling me? i actually laughed out loud when i was told that.

I test them dry, with no fuel. Although they are cooled by the fuel it won't matter that much for just a test. It's pretty noticeable when they are bad. Sometimes they are noisy and sometimes they try to pump but won't spin. You could even bypass all the wiring and test them as close to the tank as possible without dropping the tank. It's just something I like to do just to make sure, but after dropping the tank I think I would replace it anyway since it's already down. It could be a weak pump or only works sometimes. It's tough to trace the wiring when it starts from above the tank but I think the ground is attached to the frame close to where the wire comes out of the tank.

I had a old shop teacher tell me his kid burned his face and hand due to testing a electric fuel pump out of the tank. I heard they can blow up outside of fuel, but I never listened I always test them dry. I think its a myth, maybe his son tried lighting it or was smoking or something. I guess this would be a good show topic for mythbusters.
