Default Squeal 2 seconds at startup 89 F150 5.8l

Hey all,

Finally got the truck back and the reman engine is working great. It's like a new truck!

One issue tho. When I start up the truck, for about 2-3 seconds it is a high pitched squeal (sounds like the serpentine belt). Pulleys are clean / lubed, reman alternator just put on before new engine put in. I removed the smog pump due to it rattling, and put on the 91.5 belt. Ever since the new belt was put on, it started the squealing.

Think it's just a bad belt? It's a dayco, and I've heard they were notorious for squealing.

I can't find a Gatorback in the 91.5 length, if you guys think it is a bad belt, any recommendations on a better brand then Dayco?

Try a belt lube on the belt till you can get the belt you want, might help with squeal. Also double check belt tension. As far as a replacement I am at a lose I do not have a serpentine belt on my truck and the car is an OEM belt

Don't put any belt lube, belt dressing, or anything else on the belt. There is a reason it's squealing and that stuff will only mask the problem (straight from Dayco http://www.daycoproducts.com/why-bel...t-a-noisy-belt, but every belt manufacturer states that any "dressing" is not recommended).

Ensure that you have proper tension on the belt, that everything is lined up properly, your tensionor and idler pulleys are free spinning (no grinding feeling when spun-best to remove them and stick finger though the mount hole and spin). If by lubed you mean on the surface of the pulleys themselves then you need to remove any lubricant that is on the contact surface of the pulley.

Probably just not enough tension on the belt.

Tensioner is right in the center of the min-max spot, and I can turn belt 1/4 turn when it's on.

I didn't put lube on the surface, where the belt rests, just on the spinning parts.

Pulleys look all lined up (was not squealing before I took off smog pump). I don't quite understand how much a 1/2 in shorter belt would make a difference, without going to buy one, then installing it and seeing if that is better. The old belt (with the smog pump on) was a bit tighter. The tensioner was almost at its maximum position. I really had to crank it to get the belt to fit, but it didn't squeal then.

I can get an 89.7 or 91.9 gatorback belt. But I think the 89.7 is probably way too short.

There is an issue with the a/c, in which the clutch is not engaging. But I think it's pressure related. Nothing squealed before I put this different belt on, so I was kind of ruling out any other problems besides the belt itself?

If you said the old belt was tighter and there was no squealing, I think you found your answer.

It doesn't matter where you belt dressing, it's now on the belt. It should be illegal to sell that crap.

I would ditch the Dayco belt and go with a Gates, but that's just personal preference.

Buy an idler pulley for where the smog pump used to go and use the stock belt length.

That makes perfect sense.

The original design of the truck had 7 pulleys with a certain length belt. If you remove a pulley, and put a shorter belt, it wasn't by design and could lead to issues.

I'll add the pulley and look in the trash for my old belt. But which smog pump eliminator fits the 5.8l EFI engine? All I see from a quick glance are things for the 5.0.
