Default I know its not an F150, but Please help my Ford Escort

I know there is a guru here with an escort, I tried the escort forums but they are impossible to read, bad layout and colors, my problem is it runs rough, doesn't stall, clears up, and runs rough again, and its getting worse, I pulled a code for the MAF incorrect voltage or something, could that cause the engine to run rough? How about the coil pack? I am not familiar with MAF and its symptoms, or dis w\ coil packs, I hate to spend alot to change things, maf and coil packs arent cheap. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

MAF-Mass Air Flow sensor. It calculates how much air is comming in and uses that to adjust the Air/fuel ratio, that could throw the idle off, or make it run rough. I would deffinately take it off, and test it accordingly to your hanes/chiltons. then go from there.

Thanks. I know these things are touchy. I liked the old days. A carb with points. Simple.

41 or 42. Memory going bad. I grew up with carbs and duraspark ignitions, until about 12 yrs ago when I got my first efi. I still haven't graduated to any mass air systems yet.

Read on how to clean the MAF...but be very careful & not break the piece in the airflow! Could just be dirty...I spray mine with electrical contact cleaner & don't physically touch the heated wires.

Unplug the maf with the car running and see if there is a reaction. If there is, at least you know the system works somewhat, you can take it off and try cleaning it. If nothing happens, test to see if you have voltage going into it, if there is, the maf is probably toast, and if not then you're going electrical. That's the simple check. And I wouldn't worry about the coil packs, they should last longer than the car will.

And if this helps any, I had a 2.3 liter ranger with dual coil packs. I had a lousy idle, no power, and my gas mileage dropped something awful. I was getting an egr code. So I replaced the entire egr system. Nothing. Then the coil packs, and the computer. Which ended up being around a nice 200 bucks all total. It ended up being this little box, I think its called the ICM, ignition contrule module. 100 bucks at autozone and it was back to normal.

I cleaned the maf, I will try to unplug it to check it, I will also look at the icm, and boogerburns, I plan on it. I am looking for a donor truck with mass air. It would go good with the 5speed I plan on putting in.
