Question Smog help...

My 92 has the 5.8 351w and I noticed the smog pump was missing the pulley & hoses. Also noticed that the vapor canister is missing the 2 hoses as well. Is there any pics on how to hook the hoses back up?

Do you have an inspection or something or are you just a tree hugger?

If you don't have any replies with pics tomorrow I'll hook you up.

Most of that stuff will be wrecking yard stuff. You can get bits like that for pretty much nothing.
Never mind the tree hugger comments - the vapour canister should be hooked up because that system vents your gas tanks of excess fumes and helps keep your truck from smelling like a dirty old oil rag especially on hot days.
The air pump helps your cats work better which, environment aside, turn the extremely poisonous gas your truck produces into a safer chemical that you and your passengers can survive through (carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide). So not a bad thing to have hooked up.
Hard to even mention keeping your emissions controls working properly around this site without being called a tree hugger, but that's just people who don't really understand what catalytic convertors do.

Totally understand lol. I do hate the fumes being in the truck and mpg sucks. If I don't hook it back up, would capping the canister help with the fumes?

No, it kind of filters the fumes when it has to - the purge valve that allows the motor to suck the fumes into the intake will only open when the computer determines that the motor can handle the extra, then it pulls all the vapour into the motor and burns it.
The charcoal in the canister helps absorb vapours when the purge valve is closed.
You should have a large "dump hose" - "l" or "u" shaped, another medium hose that hooks on the steel pipe that goes back to the fuel tank vents, and a small vacuum line that goes up to the throttle body. The purge valve is inline in that vacuum line about 3" away from the throttle body.
Lots of complicated seeming little things in a system that most people don't even realize is there. But you can bet that if it wasn't important, Ford wouldn't have bothered installing it on hundreds of thousands of trucks.
Your gas tanks will be full of fumes, especially in hot weather when the gas is expanding - all those fumes have to go somewhere. The intake seems to be a pretty logical place to dispose of them.
Hope that makes sense.

I don't disagree with people that keep the emissions components present and in good working order, but on my truck I deleted it all. When I deleted the charcoal canister I removed the metal hose that runs from the gas tanks to the front of the truck. Then I put a fuel filter on the hose and routed it up into the inside of the bedside (near the front tank filler neck). Chris is right fumes can be smelled near the rear of the truck but it is a rarity. I have only smelled it a couple times, doesn't bother me.

Honestly the only benefit I got from it was a cleaner engine bay, but that's what I was going for. There's no other reason to delete it.

LMFAO I was joking and as far as not knowing what Cats do, you are wrong... I deleted my smog pump using a shorter belt, the canister is still there but there are no cats on my truck either... so no need to be a *****, it was a honest joke... and as far as being in the cab, I have yet to have any issues with it... nor does anyone who rides with me...

Well ok, Ha ha.
Judging by the posts I see you put up, you seem like a pretty intelligent guy. And if you know what cats do, and I don't doubt that you do, then you will know that without them you're pumping carbon monoxide out your tailpipe. And of course you know that carbon monoxide makes people very sick, or worse. Not too much of a problem for you being the tailpipe is way behind you. But have you considered the kid in the car that's stuck in traffic right beside your tailpipe - trying to breathe while your truck pumps his parents car full of deadly poisons. Put it that way, it's not funny at all. It's irresponsible and you should know better.

Haha dude I don't live in a city, my life doesn't revolve around traffic and sitting at red lights and the average time you sit at a light isn't long enough for you to pump someone's car full of carbon monoxide. I'm also a firefighter and yes I'm fully aware of what carbon monoxide does to your body but my exhaust dumps over my rear just over my rear axle and as you believe you are some kind of scientist heat rises and damn, believe it or not exhaust is hot so it floats up into the atmosphere and probably screws something up there but I honestly don't care apparently global warming is happening but it's funny how the world still turns... , the truck runs great without it and I'm sure little Johnny in his parents car will be just alright... if not I guess I'd have the fastest response time on that fire-rescue call, step off bro and go hump a tree.
