Why it a bad idea to delete the egr? Mine is still hooked up but the tube broke off so I just capped it off at the exhaust manifold

The EGR lowers combustion temperature to reduce NOx. It also reduces detonation and allows for more advance of the timing during partial throttle. The computer was designed for this so it automatically advances timing at low load cruise. If the EGR is disabled you will get knock and ping leading to engine damage. The knock sensor should stop most of the knock by retarding the timing as soon as it begins to knock which will cause partial burn creating deposits which increase the likely hood of detonation, run on etc. The other function of the EGR is that it displaces air fuel mixture in the cylinders with burned exhaust gasses when there is low load on the engine. That means at cruise you use less fuel. EGR reduces NOx which is harmful to the exhaust system. The cat works harder without the EGR shortening its life. Disabling the EGR creates more harmful emissions which not only hurt the environment but cause cancer and breathing problems to the people around it the most ( ie the driver). Finally its illegal to remove any exhaust components.

Well I also picked up a set of these hooker headers. Are these the long ones that produce lots of torque?

Put the dime back in smaller hole.

What are you talking about? These headers are new, and they have O2 bungs, but they are still blocked.

As for the EGR, my concern is that it causes a lot of carbon buildup, and that can cause fuel to wick into the manifold's walls.

Also how do I plumb it?

I def like the idea of using an EGR, cause of the fuel savings and no cancer, etc. But it is also a pain in the ***.

The idea that EGR creates carbon build up is mostly a myth. It dithers out gasses in tiny amounts like a fuel injector. The valve itself sometimes has carbon issues because of the concentration in the small place , but the fuel which has cleaners init anyway, comes directly after the EGR injection at high speed at high temperature. It doesn't have a chance to stick to the valves. Remember they have been using this system successfully since the 70's and are only now beginning to replace it with variable valve timing. As far as plumbing it connects to your intake manifold and heads.

Are you talking about the air injection system?

Well I have taken off the throttle body only to see copious amounts of black soot in the intake. I tried carb cleaner, but it remained.

I was asking how I can plumb it with those headers I mentioned I purchased.

No I mean the egr. Sensor and everything is still hooked up. Just no tube. And I've also removed the smog/air pump. Whichever is on top of the alternator on the 4.9
