Default Regapping Plats & Irids a No-No ?

Been researching increasing of plug gap along w/ further advancement of base timing setting. Most articles specify using motorcraft's basic copper plugs but w/ no reason as to why. I'm running AC/delco copper core dual plat rapid fires w/ norm. gap at 15 BTDC (-3 from where I started pinging with the computers addition to timing. I don't think I could expect a plug to have much more resistance to ping than that, especially at 87 octane. So I contacted AC/Delco about increasing gap & was told Plat.& Irid. plugs should never have there gap altered because they are extremely brittle and that could cause them to break off inside the cylinder during use later. If I intended to mod my plugs gaps from factory set, not to use Plats. or Irids. Anybody having experience w/ increasing gap for performance, please comment. After the overall performance increase from the additional advancement of base timing, I doubt there's much more I could expect out of this engine w/o getting into cam or header country and I'm wondering if its worth all the trouble of increasing & testing performance by .002 incriments until a decrease in performance is noted & then reduce by .003 as the final gap setting to use seems to be the method w/o use of a dyno. In fact, if anything begs for use of a dyno it's gotta be something like this! How much would that cost?
