Safe to buy as first truck/toy?
Hey everyone, this is my first post so sorry if I find some way to screw it up.. Anyways, my friends neighbor purchased this truck new in '93. I saw it sitting by his barn one day and stopped to ask him about it. He told me the whole story of the truck and was really honest about everything. It has the 5.0, 302, automatic, 4x4. He parked it in '09 with about 115,000 on it because he had a 2nd truck and a car. The exhaust manifold has a crack about 2 inches long. The yoke on the front divers side was busted so that wheel wont turn in 4x4. Those were the only 2 major things wrong with it at the time. I talked to him about it and he said i could work on it, and buy it if interested. Body is in decent shape, rear fenders rusted out and drivers fender rusted out as well. 2 rust spots on the front bumper. Underneath looks pretty rough and obviously needs new brake lines. Underneath was really rusted good from sitting. I put a battery and some fresh gas in it, and it started right up without any problems. Good engine. Transmission was rebuilt in '99. New tires with about 10,000 miles and all have held air since '09 except for 1 which has a slow leak. Interior was really clean and looked like new. Its an XLT and has power everything, was totally loaded, even steering wheel radio controls. I expected rust when i opened the doors, but they were flawless. The doors and below them and around that area it looked perfect. Drove it around the yard with a busted brake line and it went through all the gears without issue. The windshield also has about a 2 foot crack along the bottom but out of sight. He told me he wanted a little below scrap price, $400 for it. I was thinking of offering $300. Im only 17 and need a first truck and figured with some work i could have this for a year or so as an occasional driver or even just as a toy to drive around in the field. Opinions on price or if i should get it? Any input at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot!

These trucks are a great toy, parts are affordable, and available every where, they are easy to work on, and they have the ability to be anything from a workhorse to a race car.
the bad news, gas mileage ain't so good for a kid budget.

Hey im 17 too. Box dont look too bad. I got a good fender and manifolds for ya. I love the color. Kinda close to what i want to paint my 87. If that truck hasnt been parked so long thats a $1000 truck right there if it didnt have a lot of the repairs needed

Just call me sean. Really
Runs and drives good? Worth $400 easy! The rust ain't too hard to work with. I'd buy it right now at that price as a parts truck without a motor/tranny no hesitation.
I'll be 20 in 2 weeks, and been driving my truck daily since a week after turning 17. The gas mileage isn't that great, but it's doable unless you're running 40 miles a day and burning 80 bucks a week. I'd rather pay the gas than repairs though.
And then I bought a me a bike to save gas, 55mpg! Still driving the truck a lot though
