Default Just acquired '88 F150

I jut picked up an '88 F150 fuel injected 5.0 V8 5-speed manual 4WD. This is the single cab regular bed. A couple questions:

1. In addition to changing the oil and topping off the brake, radiator, and power steering fluids, what should I do right off the bat?

2. When I park it, turn off the engine, get out and stand around the truck, I notice a slight gas smell. I still notice the smell after leaving the truck parked for several hours. What should I do about this?

Welcome to the Forums....

1) Complete tune up if it hasnt been done in a while...Cap, Rotor, Plugs and wires...

2) find out where it is leaking....the gas tanks rust out commonly...so check there and the lines for wetness....

Get under the truck and start looking around. Depending on how the previous owner treated the truck, it could be a number of different things. Some people have leaky tanks, some have problems with the dual tanks, some have problems with one tank and not the other.

I had that problem when I first got my truck. I got it and filled both the tanks. First thing I noticed was the small of gas. For mine, if the front take is full, and the back tank is being used, it leaks. But, if the front tank is half full, and the back tank is being used, it fine.

I located the leak. Problem is: I don't know what this part is called or what it does. It may be a fuel filter or fuel pump? Here's a description:

On the underside of the truck near the driver-side running boards are three items placed in series. The hoses coming from the gas tanks attach into the first, leave it and go into the second one, and then leave it and go into the third, as they make their way towards the front of the truck. Each item is a sort of medium-sized cylindrical or filter-shaped thing. Written on the second one is "Caution: pressurized fuel system."

The leaky item in question is the first one, closest to the tanks. It's got about four fuel hoses going into it and what looks to be the same number coming out. Anyone know what it is?

It's called the dual function reservoir. It has the valve that directs fuel from the proper tank. The reservoir holds a small amount of fuel so the high pressure fuel pump can pressurize the fuel system. The reservoir does unscrew and has a large o-ring on it. If it's leaking there and someone has unscrewed it before the o-ring may have fallen out of place.

Excellent. What is the procedure for taking this off and fixing it. Is it something I can do on my own, or does it require special handling due to the pressurized system?

It's best to depressurize the fuel system first. This can be done by unplugging the fuel pump relay and running the truck until it stalls, but I usually just push the schraeder valve on the fuel rail. Some gas will spray out but not a whole lot. The reservoir just unscrews like an oil filter. You may need something to unscrew it so be sure not to break it as it is plastic.
