1988 Fan Clutch question
I just replaced the fan clutch in my '88 5.0 ATX 4x4.
Background: When I purchased the truck a year ago there seemed to be no roaring sound that existed that I would associate with the fan clutch. Then about 3 months ago, out of the blue the noise started. Then a few weeks later it stopped. Then I started hearing a sound like the fan was hitting the shroud. So I took a look at the fan clutch and sure enough the seal was toasted. So I've replaced the clutch. I'm still having the roaring sound like the fan is engaged even when the engine is cold. And it's like the truck is running in place and sounds like it is reving high before shifting out of 1st or 2nd. This doesn't seem to go away. Is it possible that I got a bad replacement clutch or some other issue exists. Or nothing wrong at all. I've read that the roaring sound will stop within a few minutes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mine will roar for a minute or two on a cold start - this bothered me as well after the clutch change. With the hood up, I could feel the drop in fan air flow as well as the drop in roar as time passes after the start.
It's been doing this for about a year now since the replacement, haven't noticed any changes, no overheating problems - so I'm assuming it's normal and calling it good-to-go - gots enough stuff to work on that's actually broke. :-)

Thanks for the reply...I expected what you describe with yours. But it seems to last for quite awhile...especially the power band part of it (high revs 1st to 2nd). When it was broke there wasn't any power band issue at all. I didn't have any over heating at all prior to replacing. It just seems weird to me.
