The pump job in total is about a 1 to 2 hour job. I took the time to thoroughly clean out my old hoses with brake cleaner and compressed air while I had them off, which added to my time.
As far as fluid goes, I've had great success with Valvoline Type F. I will probably try Amsoil Super Shift Trans Fluid in it at some point, but honestly I'm happy with Valvoline's quiet performance so I will probably stick with that for the time being.

Older Ford's are notorious for power steering whine. I saw a post somewhere on here while back about converting from the Ford style pump to the Saginaw style pump. I just got done doing the swap on my 94 F150 w/302, and what a huge difference it made. I should note that before I tried the swap I tried a couple different Ford pumps, different type of fluids and additives and nothing got rid of the whine completely. So a while back I was at the bone yard and grabbed a power steering pump and bracket off 1986 E150 with a 302 (just needed the bracket, pulley, and bolts). Went to O'reillys and bought a new p/s pump and pressure hose for the 86 E150. The only modification that I had to do was to drill out the 4 ears on the A/C compressor so that I could use the 3/8 bolts that the 86 E150 bracket used. Super easy straight forward swap and ZERO pump noise!

Yes, Ford put Saginaw style pumps in certain year vans. I know 1985 and 1986. There may be other years as well, but I'm not sure. If you are looking to swap it you will need the bracket from the E150 for the Saginaw style pump.

The dealership told me their "front end guy" says to put Mercon V in it. I have Type F now but I can only find the cheap stuff so I went there to get some Motorcraft Type F. Anyone try Mercon V?

I've heard of people having success with Amsoil ATF. I'm using Valvoline Type F in my truck and I don't have any whining. The pump type is an Atsco reman that's sold under Duralast at Autozone.
