Thank you.
Figured. I've had 7 E- Series, starting w/ a 63' E-100. 86'/ First year EFI was introduced as an "option" on E- Series.

With all that experience I'm glad that I've been listening to your advice!

One thing I have to mention is that I had been getting an EGR related code. I had found out that the vacuum hose that goes to the egr had been disconnected and plugged up. I removed the egr valve, cleaned it, put it back with a new gastket, removed the plug from the hose, and reconnected everything. I am not receiving any bad codes on the scanner, but I have been wondering if the egr had been disabled by the previous owner for a reason... Would this egr system cause my issue (bogging down and back-fireing under load)?

Default It is fixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So after replacing the high pressure fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator there was no difference. I decided to not replace the in tank pump. I did more research and found out that the van has another fuel filter located next to the tank selector on the rail. I removed it (it was nasty) with an oil filter wrench, replaced it with a new one and the van runs great!!!
Here is a list of things that I replaced that were known to be bad:
  • TFI module (had old one tested bad at auto part store)
  • PIP (stator pickup) this should be replaced with TFI. I just got a new distributor.
  • New coil (not sure if it was bad but it only cost $22 so I decided to replace)
  • New high pressure fuel pump (may have been damaged by clogged fuel filter)
  • New catalytic converter (old one was plugged up)
  • New fuel filters (both)
  • New fuel pressure regulator ( I do not believe that the old one was bad)
  • Cleaned out egr system
  • Cleaned out throttle body
  • Seafoam treatment in vacuum system and in tank
  • New TPS (not sure if this one was bad)
  • New spark plugs, cables, rotor, and cap.
  • Oil and filter change
  • New air filter
  • New map sensor (I do not believe that it was bad though)
I hope that this will help those that have the same problem and hopefully save you money!

This is what that fuel reservoir filter looks like:

Desperation & lack of working knowledge.

Good to here you're up & running!

We didn't cover that filter in all that?

I agree. I am glad too. We did not cover that "hidden" filter, but I just had the luck to end up with a van that had multiple parts that were bad and created similar symptoms . So now I need to fix the signal lights (don't work), reverse lights (don't work) and I need to replace the drive shaft carrier bearing. Any suggestion where to begin for the carrier bearing?

Thank you so much for all of the help

That ain't my forte, but a lot of the other member's have probably done them in their sleep (or worse conditions). Drive shaft carrier bearings...U-joints?

The carrier bear, or center support bearing, is found on the longer wheelbase trucks, like scabs with long bed, etc. It is there because the driveshaft would be too long and it helps with the angle of the driveshaft. Not sure of all the reasons for having the carrier bearing, just trying to remember what I have read. I had mine replaced last year, not by me, took it to a shop.
