Unless you are letting it idle excessively changing the oil before 3/5k is basically throwing money away.

I think you're right!

Of course, I wrote that as I was thinking about the 'oil life left' gauge on my screen...

Good to know, as I won't be putting man miles on my "project truck" and wondering the same thing...

I'm more worried about the 'acid' building up in the oil I've been reading about. I 'might' keep on changing it every year but 'might' do it every two years. I still can't decide. It only cost $45 for me to do the oil change

If you have owned it for a long time and know its history it seems silly to change it more than once per year given the amount of miles you drive it.

When I first started working on my truck it had about 195K on the odometer and I knew it had been neglected for about the last 5 years, so I just decided that I was going to change the oil every 1000 miles or so and run techron through the fuel tanks every 3rd tank to get her cleaner. You should have seen the oil that came out after the first oil change. Now about 9k miles and 8 or 9 oil changes later, the oil is coming out much cleaner, but still dirty enough for me to think its a good idea to keep changing it on the same schedule. It only costs about $20 for me to do it myself, and given the amount I drive it per year it still works out to about every 3-4 months or so.

Too much? I buy Mobil 1 'high mileage' and a Motorcraft filter all from Walmart for around $45.
