Steve83: Hmmm, well, I'm not seeing the photo I uploaded in my reply. Not sure why; I sent it as an inline attachment. Is there another way to get it to you?

Tried a different browser this time. Seems this site doesn't play nicely with Opera. Anyway - this is what was causing the loud tapping sound.

Bad crank pulley from a 1994 302.

Odd. I have a 4.9 and it made the same chirping/squealing noise. At least from your description it was making the same noise. It seems to have subsided but occasionally will make the sound. It also seemed like it originated on the left side somewhere. I thought it was the A/C compressor

My chirp sound was caused by the water pump bearing being worn out on my 4.9. Water pump wasn't leaking any but I could pry the water pump pulley up a good inch . Replaced the water pump with a new rebuilt one and it fixed the chirping .
